  • Author: Jannet Lisa
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 1 1/2 cups 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A creamy, tangy, and slightly spicy Southern Comeback Sauce perfect for dipping, spreading, or dressing. Easy to make and customizable to your taste!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (full-fat is best!)
  • 1/4 cup chili sauce (like Heinz)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon Creole mustard (or Dijon mustard if you can’t find Creole)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more, to taste!)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (such as Tabasco or Crystal)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped green onions (optional, for garnish and flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish and flavor)

Instructions

  1. Combine the Base Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, add the mayonnaise, chili sauce, and ketchup.
  2. Add the Flavor Boosters: Pour in the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and Creole mustard (or Dijon).
  3. Spice it Up: Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and black pepper. Adjust cayenne to your spice preference.
  4. A Dash of Heat: Add the hot sauce.
  5. Emulsify with Olive Oil: Drizzle in the olive oil.
  6. Whisk it All Together: Thoroughly combine all ingredients until smooth and uniform.
  7. Taste and Adjust: Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking (more spice, tang, or salt).
  8. Chill and Let the Flavors Meld: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or longer) to allow flavors to meld.
  9. Garnish (Optional): Stir in green onions and parsley just before serving.
  10. Serve and Enjoy: Serve your Southern Comeback Sauce with your favorite dishes!

Notes

  • For a sweeter sauce, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup.
  • For a spicier sauce, use a hotter hot sauce, add more cayenne pepper, or include a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  • For a tangier sauce, add a tablespoon of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
  • For an even smokier flavor, use smoked mayonnaise or add a few drops of liquid smoke.
  • For an extra creamy sauce, add a tablespoon of sour cream or Greek yogurt.
  • For a sauce with more texture, add a tablespoon of finely chopped pickles or relish.
  • Experiment with different types of mustard, such as brown mustard, stone-ground mustard, or even honey mustard.
  • To make it vegan, use vegan mayonnaise and ensure your Worcestershire sauce is vegan-friendly.
