Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs Ground Beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1 large Yellow Onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves Garlic, minced
- 1 Red Bell Pepper, finely diced
- 1 Jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Chili Powder
- 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional)
- 1/2 tsp Dried Oregano
- 1/4 tsp Salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 tsp Black Pepper (or to taste)
- 1/2 cup Hot Honey (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/4 cup Tomato Paste
- 1/4 cup Beef Broth
- 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- For Homemade Hot Honey:
- 1 cup Honey
- 1–2 Red Chilies, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- Pinch of Salt
- Optional Garnishes: Chopped cilantro, green onions, sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the Hot Honey (if making homemade): Combine honey, sliced red chilies, apple cider vinegar, and salt in a small saucepan. Gently simmer over low heat for 10-15 minutes. Let cool and strain if desired.
- Prep the vegetables: Finely chop the onion, mince the garlic, dice the red bell pepper, and mince the jalapeño if using.
- Brown the ground beef in a large skillet with olive oil over medium-high heat. Crumble and cook until no longer pink.
- Drain excess fat from the skillet.
- Add the chopped onion and diced red bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and jalapeño (if using) and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, cayenne pepper (if using), oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook for another minute.
- Add tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Pour in beef broth and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Add hot honey, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Serve hot, garnished with optional toppings like cilantro, green onions, or sesame seeds.
Notes
- For extra heat, leave the seeds in the jalapeño or add more cayenne pepper.
- Adjust the amount of hot honey to your preferred level of sweetness and spice.
- Serve with your favorite toppings, such as chopped cilantro, green onions, sesame seeds, lime wedges, avocado slices, or sour cream.
- This recipe is versatile and can be used in tacos, bowls, nachos, sliders, stuffed peppers, pasta, or as a pizza topping.
