Description

Learn how to make quick dinner rolls at home with this easy recipe. These soft, fluffy rolls are perfect for any meal and can be made with simple ingredients and straightforward steps.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Whisk in the beaten egg, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  3. Stir in the melted butter until incorporated.
  4. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if needed.
  6. Lightly grease a large bowl. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled.
  7. Gently punch down the dough to release air.
  8. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal pieces.
  9. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  10. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan or baking sheet. Arrange the rolls in the pan, leaving space between them.
  11. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes, or until almost doubled.
  12. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Bake rolls for 18-22 minutes, until golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  14. Remove from oven and cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for best results.
  • Adjust flour as needed based on humidity and flour type.
  • Do not overknead the dough to prevent tough rolls.
  • The second rise is crucial for fluffy rolls.
  • Cool rolls completely on a wire rack to prevent sogginess.
  • Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
